Hedrin

Hedrin lice treatment is an oil that is available only in the U.K. Hedrin is used to kill lice by preventing the bugs from being able to release moisture from their bodies, as lice do regularly throughout the day. After about eight hours, the lice literally explode from retaining all of their moisture. Because the lice are so tiny, this doesn't result in any mess- just dead lice.

Studies done in the U.K. have shown Hedrin to be extremely effective in killing lice, but there are a couple of drawbacks for some people. If you have acne prone skin, Hedrin can and will cause break outs. It can also cause eye irritation if it comes into contact with the eyes. But, for those who are careful to keep it out of their eyes and who don't have a problem with acne, Hedrin is often the easiest and more effective way to kill lice.

There are currently two formulations of Hedrin:

The original version of Hedrin is a thick oil that must be left on for eight hours. Like the tea tree oil lice treatment and the olive oil lice treatment, you will need to put a plastic shower cap over the hair to keep the oil in contact with the scalp and hair. The oil is left on the scalp for at least eight hours. Removing the oil often requires three or more washes in the bathtub or shower, but the results are generally impressive.

The latest version of Hedrin is a one-hour gel. This version is effective against lice, unscientific testing by killingheadlice.com has shown it to be not as effective as using the eight-hour formula. The gel stays in place easier than the liquid oil version, but it can still cause breakouts. The gel is also extremely difficult to remove from the hair. The manufacturer recommends putting shampoo directly on the gel to break it up before wetting the hair, and this does greatly help the removal process. Even with following these directions, however, it can take five washes or more to remove the lice killing gel from the hair.

One problem with using Hedrin for those in the U.S. is that importing it from a U.K. seller can be prohibitively expensive for some. But, it can be ordered from the U.K. and from a variety of sources, all with varying shipping prices.
